I can do it....and I did it!

This was so true today! After a fun-filled night celebrating our friend Brooke's birthday, we woke up the next morning ready to take on the 1.5 mile hike up to Timpanogos Cave with the birthday girl and Jessen. Now that may not sound like a long distance, but for 4 late-20s adults trying to get back in shape (one of which was slightly hung over from the night before) it was definitely a challenge. The 1.5 miles also took us on a 1,000 foot elevation change, which had some intense inclines. Sure, there were times where I was behind the group because I needed to control my breathing so that I didn't have an asthma attack (left my inhaler at home, oops!) but I still was able to catch up to the group several times. Though my progress seemed like it was going to take a while to get there, I made it to the cave and was able to enjoy the natural wonder that the cave had to offer. I also got to enjoy watching Shane try to fit through some of the short hallways and, at times, narrow passages. This was definitely something that we all agreed we need to do at least once a year, but coming from someone (me) who felt that this may be a daunting task due to feeling a little under the weather, it will NOT be the morning after we have had some drinking fun.

Gotta work for it!

Woke up this morning ready and excited to workout. Ran on the elliptical for 15 min., did some relaxing but awesome pilates, then 15 min of running again. I feel great during the day at work knowing that I had already accomplished something for the day. Last night's lean legs pyramid is kicking my butt everytime I get out of my seat, but it was awesome. If I don't get today's TIU videos before I work out tonight, definitely going to try another pyramid. They are KILLER!........
Okay, so once I got home from work and finished with dinner (tater tot casserole, only because my husband REALLY wanted to make it)I decided that my legs were sore from the past 3 workouts and I should take a break. But....while I was sitting on the couch watching the season finale rerun of Glee, I decided that since I wrote in my TIU journal that I was going to do a workout pyramid I needed to do one. This was my first time doing the Lean Arms pyramid. Let's just say I really wonder if I will ever get used to the tummy tucks at the top of the pyramid. You should try them!

By the way, follow me on Twitter where I post during the day little things that I think about enjoy eating and get motivation from others. @smashleylb

Also....I somehow managed to drink 96 ounces of water today. That's 3 32oz. Nalgene bottles full.

I gotta pee!

Today was my first time writing in my Tone It Up journal. Sign  up for the community at Today was a great day full of firsts....first day back to work on a 5-day schedule, first day working out in the morning and first day working out when my Jazzercise class was cancelled. Okay, maybe not the first time I have ever done these things, but it was at least the first day of my fresh start. I have to be to work an hour later than I have been used to over the past 2 years, so I am taking advantage by still waking up early and working out. I also started the hydration challenge posted this past Thirsty Thursday. I need to drink 80 oz. of water to meet my daily need. That is 2 32oz. Nalgene bottles and a 16oz. bottle before my workout and a glass during followed by a glass after. I HAVE NEVER HAD TO PEE SO MUCH IN MY LIFE! I loved it! It made me feel like I had so much energy....can't wait for tomorrow! I also got wind that my Jazzercise class was cancelled, so I came home and jumped rope for 5 minutes, then did the TIU Lean Leg pyramid...totally going to be dying tomorrow.

Failure to prepare is preparing to fail.....

I started the Tone It Up Fall Challenge today. No workout, just starting with the Sunday challenge. You see, they give you the choice of Sunday RUNday or Sunday BUMday. Mine was a BUMday, preparing to go back to work on Monday. Today's challenge was to prepare your lunch and snacks for Monday and Tuesday. This is what I did. I had bought a frozen entree for lunch because it felt like it would be easier to ease back into work with. I did prep apples, grapes, Wheat Thins, etc. Tomorrow is my first day back to work on the new 5-day schedule. I have set my alarm for 6am (which is actually 40 minutes later than normal) and will get up to workout. Wish me luck!

Give me a break, give me a break....

We have all taken the week off of work. This is what we will be doing...and Shane may have me doing some yard work too. However, I fully commit to starting my Tone It Up Fall Challenge on 9/12. Hopefully it will be an easy change since it will be accompanied by my new work schedule. And to make sure I stick to it, I will post something every day of the challenge here on my blog. Wish me luck! (This also mean you have an extra week to join me on the challenge.) ;)

If you like Pina Coladas.......

1. In a 16oz mixer cup put in 2oz of Malibu Rum and 4 wedges of fresh pineapple
2. Add 8oz of Cascade Ice 2 Calorie Pina Colada Mixer
3. Shake gently or stir aggressively and pour entire contents into a Hurricane or 16oz glass
4. Garnish with an orange wheel and a pineapple wedge
**For a nice Martini style Pina Colada follow instructions above only strain contents into an 8oz martini glass and garnish with a floating orange wheel*
I mix mine with Cruzan Mango Rum (1 shot=56 calories). Add a Dole Pineapple Slice (which I cut into fourths) and add 30 calories. That's a total of 88 calories for one drink! How awesome is that! And if you use the whole bottle which is 2.2 servings, use 2 shots and 2 pineapple slices and you are still only consuming 176 compared to one website that said a pina colada can pack as many as 526 calories for one drink! My favorite was freezing half the bottle with a shot of rum and drinking it the next day...slushee!

I'm going to Tone It Up! Who's with me?

Here we go! This time, its for real.....everything I've been doing has prepared myself for this challenge. Starting this Tuesday, Sept. 6, I will begin to Tone It Up with Karena and Katrina. They push you to do "Booty Calls" (morning workouts) every day just to get you going, but also give you motivational workouts to keep things fresh. Being able to wake up in time to do these workouts is going to be so much easier with my new work schedule. (If I had to find a silver lining to working 5 days a week, this would be it.) You see, I work for the State of Utah and have been working 4 10-hour days each week for the past 2 years. Having Fridays off was awesome, but the legislature didn't agree, so we are going back to 5 days a week. So....I am treating this as my "back-to-school" motivation for change. A new schedule, new me.

But what fun is doing stuff by yourself? And how hard is it to keep yourself accountable, especially when your cravings come on strong? The first challenge for the TIU Fall Series is to get others involved. If you click on the pic above, it will take you to the Tone It Up website where you can sign up. Make sure to list me as the person that referred you, so that I can have the chance to win some cool workout gear. Then remember to refer some of your friends so that you have the chance to win too.

I also signed up for the Lose 8 lbs. challege, Boot Camp workout. This way I can get a variety of workouts and recipes to help me get started and to keep on going.
So what do you say? Wanna Tone It Up with me?

I put some new shoes on and suddenly everything's right....

This was my reward for completing the Healthy Utah Assessment and getting $50. I am thinking of it as an investment to my future health. There's nothing like getting a new pair of shoes to make you want to work also makes me feel like I am getting more from my workout. Plus, when I bought these at the Nike store, I completed a survey and get $5 off my next purchase.
